Undefeated in 36 boxing contests with 25 of those 36 wins coming by way of knockout IBF welterweight boxing champion Kell Brook has proved he is a good fighter, beating all those who have been put in front of him. But even with the shiny brown IBF belt firmly wrapped around his waist there are many who feel that Kell Brook is a untested fighter who has protected his unbeaten record and his belt by fighting challengers who possess no real threat in giving him a good fight or have any chance of claiming his title. With that being said over the years since claiming the IBF welterweight title Kell hasn’t’ been shy in calling out well known good fighters in and around his division. Most notably the names such as Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, and Timothy Bradley have been described by kell as fighters with big names who are proven good in the division and who can provide him with a big pay per view fight which he and the fans have long been calling for.
But the fight that stands out the most which Kell has been requesting for is an all British UK welterweight showdown with boxing crossover star Amir Khan. Even before claiming his welterweight title in 2014 Kell has called for a British mega fight with the former junior welterweight WBA & IBF world champion which at one stage seemed a certain summer boxing pay per view event. But with Amir Kahn getting concussively knocked out cold in his recent heroic WBC middleweight title fight attempt against hard hitting sturdy Mexican boxer Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas, the UK south Yorkshire vs. greater Manchester british welterweight dream fight got Ko'd with him.
Kell Brook is a big welterweight who has in the past had struggles in making the weight comfortably.
It seems that the junior middleweight division (154lbs) is not too far away for Kell to compete in and with the struggle to get huge career defining fights at welterweight, it doesn’t’ seem that it will be a problem for Kell in getting those big name fights in the bigger division. The junior middleweight division is stacked with young skillful talent who are all ready and willing to fight each other as was seen with the recent great ShowTime boxing card (21/05/2016) which featured the champions fighting against strong evenly matched opposition defending their titles respectively. Jermell Charlo (WBC), Jermall Charlo (IBF) ,Erislandy Lara (WBA, IBO) all successfully defended their junior middleweight titles against good testing opponents who themselves possess the ability to be champions.
To show how evenly matched against great opposition Kell would be if he moved up to the 154lbs division, the current regarded best junior middleweight in the world Erislandy Lara (WBA, IBO) is 5ft9 inches tall and has a reach of 75 inches. Kell Brook the current IBF welterweight champion is also 5ft9 inches tall and has a reach of 69 inches.
So what is the weight? Kell the junior middleweight division is stacked full of talent and big fight opportunities for you to showcase your skills under the bright lights against evenly match good opponents. And with your past struggles in making the welterweight limit and you getting older making the jump won’t affect you at all as you won’t have to starve yourself or cut your body down to make weight, which means you will be feeling even stronger during training camp and come fight night.
