Last Saturday Baltimore’s finest weaponry Gerona ‘Tank’ Davis showcased his power, speed, and composed ability when he dismantled Former featherweight champion Jesus Cuellar in three rounds to become the WBA super featherweight champion. A relaxed Davis easily negated a fast start from Cuellar at the start of the first round before dropping him with a perfect timed body shot late in the round. The knockdown took the steam out of Cuellar who was still trying to apply pressure in the next two rounds but lacked the power to really trouble Davis. After bullying his opponent for two more rounds Davis finished the fight in round 3 when an accumulation of hard combinations dropped Cuellar into the ropes and crashing to the canvas. With this impressive victory over a former champion the ‘Tank’ is a two time world champion and improves his record to 20-0 with 19 concussive knockouts to his name.

Growing stronger in each fight and looking more and more solid in his performances many now feel it is the right time to release the Tank onto bigger challenges in his division. In the post-fight interview the name that was mentioned the most was current WBO junior lightweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko. Lomachenko is currently training for a big fight himself when he faces WBA and The Ring Lightweight champion Jorge Linares on 12/05/2018. If lomachenko gets through his fight and decides to fight Davis at a catch weight or move back down, it would be an impressive step in the right direction by Davis’s handlers in releasing the ‘Tank’.

We can only wait and see what the future holds for Davis in terms of his opponent for his next fight but it’s fair to say we can assume it will be a bigger and better challenge for Gervonta to showcase his true ability and skills. He seems ready and willing to face any challenge that presents itself to him and with youth and time still on his side, if he continues to work hard and dedicate himself to the sport like his mentor Floyd he could become the future p4p star and the face of the lighter weights in boxing.
