On Saturday night 28th September 2019 we were treated to a gladiator type war as Errol Spence JR and Shaun Porter battled in a mouth-watering welterweight unification showdown. Coming into the fight many felt spence had the overall advantage in terms of being victorious on the night, and some even believed he would stop porter late in the fight disregarding the latter’s solid chin and iron will to win. In the end spence managed to each out a split decision win in a fight which could have gone to either fighter. But it wasn’t the decision which had fans talking after the bout, it was the physical way in which the two lion hearts went at it toe to toe in a phone booth action fight for 12 championship rounds.

We all knew Shaun Porter would bring the heat as his style has been based around physical inside aggression his whole career and it served him well during this bout. He managed to rough up Errol in ways we have never witnessed before, short over hand rights landing flush were a frequent reoccurrence in this bout so much so, Errol’s eyes were evidently bruising and swelling rapidly something we have never witnessed with him during his career up until this point.

Body shots were reigning in slashing hard across Errol’s ribs sometimes landing unintentionally low drawing out loud oooh’ s from the viewing crowd who watched in suspense. But Spence JR showed his truth throughout this bout by giving back as good as he got and even better in the 11th round when a sweet left hook/uppercut landed flush on porter’s solid chin knocking his head and neck sharply to the left from impact and momentarily dropping him to the canvas seated with both gloves touching the ground.

This proved to be the deciding factor in the fight and the expression on porter’s face signified this as he received a standing count from the referee. “man that has cost me the fight”. if facial expressions could tell us what a person is thinking that’s exactly what was going through Shaun’s head as he stood disappointed in what just happened. more embarrassed and annoyed than hurt a spurred-on porter screamed “let’s go” in defiance of the knockdown to a relieved Errol Spence JR. This moment was a clear highlight of what we had witnessed for 12 rounds from these warriors. No quit, Fight till the end, and leave it all in the ring.

We came into the fight wondering if Errol Spence JR was the “Truth” he proclaimed to be. We got the answer that Errol spence Jr is the cream of the crop in the welterweight division, and he can hold his own with any style from rounds 1 through to 12, and he is now a unified champion in the division.
