Vasyl Lomachenko the current ‘WBO’ 130 pound king and former 126 WBO king is fast becoming one of the pound 4 pound number one fighters in the world. He only has 9 fights to his name in the professional boxing ranks, but is already a two division weight world champion. Leaving the amateur boxing scene in 2012 with a stellar winning record and a collection of worldwide amateur belts and trophies, Vasyl has already proved himself as one of the, if not the best amateur boxer of the last decade to box in the amateur scene. He has been willing to fight the very best in his division and with the exception of Orlando salido has a 100% record against the top contenders and champions he has faced. Considering the high level of opposition ‘high tech’ has faced in his 9 fights none have been a real challenge for the Ukrainian great, in order for him to showcase his true potential.

Lesson learnt against salido

In just his second fight as a professional the amateur great lomachenko fought for his first world title against the rugged, rough, tough, old warrior Orlando salidio for the WBO featherweight title. In a list of seasoned veteran tricks, salido questionably weighed heavily over the scheduled title weight fight limit, sacrificing his belt on the scales but gaining a valuable weight advantage over lomachenko in the process. This Wiley move by saldio proved to be decisive and effective in the fight as he was able to bully, disrupt and faze lomachencko for the 12 round contest with tactics bordering on illegal ,and get himself a 12 round ugly decision win. This fight proved to be a blessing in disguise for lomachenko who learnt a lot from it and took what he learnt into his next title fight against the god gifted, talented boxer Gary Russel JR.

Lomachenko gives fans a taste of his greatness!

November 2014 saw lomachenko once again fight for the vacant WBO featherweight title against another top 5 contender in Gary Russell Jr in a fight which on paper was considered a 50/50 contest between two great former amateur standouts. Russell Jr had the lighting hand speed and stinging power, while lomachenko had the blessed boxing ability, amateur pedigree and the experience gained from his fight with Orlando salido. In the fight Lomachenko gave us a glimpse of his god given ability by completely dominating and breaking down talented boxer Gary Russell Jr for an amazing 12 round decision win and claiming his first world title in just his fourth professional fight. Lomachenko systematically picked apart Russell Jr from head to body leaving him bloodied, swollen, and dejected.

After easy successful title defenses of his WBO 126 pound belt lomachenko sought after new and testing challenges to display to the boxing world his amazing ability and cool confidence. He moved up to the 130 pound division in early 2016 and fought Puerto Rican road warrior Roman ‘rocky’ Martinez for Martinez’s WBO super featherweight title. In a highlight reel of power, boxing IQ and ring gunmanship, lomachenko easily dispatched Martinez inside 5 rounds and effortlessly took the Puerto Rican’s belt of him, to claim his second world title in his second weight division in his 9th professional fight.

Lomachenko removes the ‘axe man’s axe’

On Saturday 26th November 2016 the power punching undefeated fan friendly former WBA 126 pound king Nicolas axe man Walters took on Vasyl Lomachenko in a long awaited fight between the two contested at the 130lb weight limit. Going into the fight lomachenko was a heavy betting favorite among boxing casuals, but many boxing insiders had Walters as a live opponent especially considering his punching power in both hands. But on this night lomachenko expressed his superb boxing ability once again with great footwork, elusive movement, amazing punching angles and striking speed to submit Walters into admitting defeat, and uncharacteristically quitting the fight after 7 rounds. Walters couldn’t land any telling shots during the fight or figure out the awkward but efficient southpaw boxing style of the Ukrainian great. Lomachencko effectively neutralized Walters’s right hand axe from round one and picked his shots head to body beautifully on the inside to wear down and submit Walters.
